Moxibustion

What is moxibustion?

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that uses the controlled burning of dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) near specific acupuncture points to warm the body, stimulate circulation, and support healing.

How it works

The practitioner holds a moxa stick or places moxa cones near the skin at targeted acupuncture points. The gentle, penetrating warmth improves blood flow, activates qi movement, and helps the body recover from conditions associated with cold, dampness, or deficiency. Moxibustion is often used alongside acupuncture as part of a combined treatment plan.

Common uses

  • Chronic pain and stiffness that worsens in cold or damp weather
  • Digestive discomfort including bloating, loose stools, and low appetite
  • Fatigue, low energy, and recovery support
  • Menstrual pain and cycle irregularities
  • Breech presentation support during pregnancy
  • Immune support and seasonal wellness

What to expect

Moxibustion feels like a gentle, warming sensation near the skin. There is no direct contact with fire. Patients typically find the treatment relaxing and comforting. Sessions last 15 to 30 minutes and are often combined with acupuncture for stronger effect.
